Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How is my GPA calculated?

Your GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade points for each course by the number of credit hours, adding those numbers together, and then dividing by the total number of credit hours attempted.

What is the difference between a Semester GPA and a Cumulative GPA?

A Semester GPA only includes the courses and credits from a single academic term. A Cumulative GPA includes all courses taken across all semesters. You can calculate your cumulative GPA by using the "Prior Cumulative GPA" box or by adding multiple semesters to the calculator. To track your current assignment scores, use our grade calculator.

How do credit hours affect my GPA?

Credit hours act as a weight. A 4-credit course has a bigger impact on your GPA than a 3-credit course. For example, getting an A (4.0) in a 4-credit class earns you 16 grade points, while an A in a 3-credit class earns you 12 grade points. To understand how this affects college admissions, read our guide on weighted vs. unweighted GPA.

How do percentage grades convert to the 4.0 scale?

This calculator uses a standard conversion scale where 93-100% is an A (4.0), 90-92% is an A- (3.7), and so on. You can view the exact percentage-to-point conversions in the "Grade Scale Reference" table on this page. If you need to convert your final score, try our CGPA to percentage tool.

Can I use this tool to figure out what grades I need next semester?

Yes! Use the "GPA Planning Calculator" section below the main tool. Enter your current GPA, total credits earned, your target GPA, and the number of credits you plan to take. It will calculate the exact average you need to score in your future classes. Students in India can also use our Indian SGPA calculator.

Is my academic data saved or tracked?

No. All calculations happen directly in your web browser. We do not store, transmit, or track the grades or credit hours you enter into this tool.
