Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between GPA and WAM in Australia?

WAM (Weighted Average Mark) is the average of your raw percentage marks (e.g., 85%), weighted by the credit points of each unit. GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average of your converted grade points (e.g., 7.0 or 4.0), also weighted by credit points. Many Australian universities use WAM for internal academic standing, while a GPA calculator is often used for international applications and scholarships.

Which grading scale should I use?

Most Australian universities (like UQ, QUT, Griffith, Adelaide, and UniSA) use the 7.0 scale. However, some Group of Eight (Go8) universities like USYD and Monash use a 4.0 scale. You should check your university's official academic handbook to confirm which scale they use before calculating. We also offer a UK degree classification calculator and a high school GPA calculator for other grading systems.

How is the WAM calculated?

WAM is calculated by multiplying your raw percentage mark by the unit value (credit points) for each subject, adding those totals together, and then dividing by the total sum of your unit values. If you need to track your raw marks for a single class before calculating your WAM, use our Australian course grade calculator.

What is a good WAM in Australia?

A WAM of 80+ is generally considered excellent (High Distinction average) and makes you competitive for Honours, Masters, and graduate programs. A WAM of 70-79 (Distinction average) is also highly regarded. To learn more about the grading bands and hurdle requirements, read our guide on what is a good WAM in Australia.
