Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How is my overall grade calculated?

Your overall grade is a weighted average. The calculator multiplies each assignment's grade by its weight (as a decimal), adds those values together, and then divides by the total weight. If you use the Points format, it simply divides your total points earned by the total points possible. To track your overall average across multiple classes, you can use our high school GPA calculator.

What happens if my assignment weights don't add up to 100%?

No problem! The calculator looks at the "Total Weight" displayed in the results box. If your assignments only add up to 80% of the course, the calculator computes your current grade based on the 80% you have completed. The remaining 20% is not counted against you yet.

How do I use the Final Grade Planning tool?

If you want to know what you need to score on your remaining assignments to reach a certain grade, enter your "Goal Grade (%)" and the "Weight Remaining (%)" (e.g., if you have a final exam worth 30% of your grade, enter 30). The tool will tell you the exact percentage you need to average on the remaining work.

Can I calculate what I need on my final exam specifically?

Yes. Scroll down to the "Final Exam Calculator" section. Enter your current overall grade, the final grade you want to achieve in the class, and how much the final exam is worth. The calculator will tell you the minimum score you need on the final.

How do letter grades convert to percentages?

If you select "Letter Grade" as your format, the calculator uses a standard 4.0 scale conversion. For example, an "A" equals 93-100%, a "B" equals 83-86%, etc. You can view the exact conversion table in the "Grading Scale Reference" section on this page. If you need to convert your final percentage to a UK system, try our UK degree classification calculator.

Is my academic data saved when I use this tool?

No. All calculations happen entirely within your web browser. We do not collect, save, or transmit your grades, assignment names, or any other personal information.
